Rumours have emerged that the British boxer, Amir Khan is planned to fight against the undefeated Floyd Mayweather in May of next year. If the match does go ahead, it will be one of the richest match ups ever recorded for a British boxer. The total amount of money the fight will raise is estimated to be around the $200 million mark. From that massive amount, Amir Khan will be rumoured to receive around $6 million guaranteed, and that could be doubled due to TV sales made around the world. Will it happen? Or is it just a rumour?
Amir Khan has already got another fixture in his schedule as he is set to fight Devon Alexander in December to try and win the IBF welterweight world title. There was speculation that Khan had backed out of this fight in favour of the Mayweather match up, but the British boxers’ team revealed that he was heavily in training for the December fight and that it has not been called off. The only thing left to be organised for the Khan v Alexander fight is the venue apparently, but despite the team saying he’s focused on December, they never directly denied the Mayweather rumour.
A statement from Team Khan read, “Team Khan would like to dispel recent reports that Amir Khan has pulled out of a potential match-up against Devon Alexander on December 7th, taking up a fight against Floyd Mayweather in May of next year instead. Contrary to this story, Amir Khan is currently in training camp in San Francisco with the aim of fighting again in December against Alexander once an agreement can be reached.”
Although the Khan v Mayweather fight is unlikely to go ahead following the statement made by Amir Khan’s team, it would certainly be a fight not to miss that would go down in history. Amir Khan used to be a top boxer and one of the world’s best, whilst Floyd Mayweather has been referred to be the best boxer around now and is mentioned among the best names ever. If the match goes ahead, Khan is in a win-win situation as if he wins, he will be seen as a British Boxing hero, but if he loses, it won’t matter too much as he is expected to lose anyway. So the question lies, is it only a rumour?
