Andy Murray to Bear GB Flag

Andy Murray has been selected to carry the flag for Great Britain in this week’s Olympic opening ceremony in Brazil.

Andy Murray Nominated

Andy Murray was nominated by the British Olympic association this Wednesday. He will lead the British team as they parade in front of thousands in Rio. The decision is not much of a surprise, as the reigning Wimbledon Champion, captain of Britain’s Davis cup team and Olympics men’s singles champion, Murray is the perfect choice.

The Wimbledon champion said that he was very proud to have been selected as flag bearer for the opening ceremony. Coupled with the opportunity to represent his country at the Olympic Games, the experience will be somewhat unbelievable for Murray.

This will be Andy Murray’s third appearance at the Olympic Games and he admits that the competition is one that he holds dear. He has great memories of London 2012 and can’t wait to compete in Rio. At this moment in time the twenty nine year old admitted that he is 100% focused on winning another Gold medal. Undoubtedly acting as flag bearer will be a prolific moment in his career and something that Murray shall remember for the remainder of his life. The Scottish star hopes to do his country proud and expressed his good wishes to all of the competing British athletes.

Team GB’s Chef de Mission Mark England spoke about the decision to choose Murray over several other candidates. He said that the conviction, with which Andy spoke to him about the honour of carrying the flag, just strengthened their decision. He believes that they have absolutely made the right choice.

England added:

“When I asked Andy to lead our team out it was received with humility and grace that is befitting of the values of Team GB. It was an emotional moment for him personally, and for this team. I will be incredibly proud to hear him address the team and I have no doubt he will inspire our athletes and the nation alike.”
