The current Premier League leaders, Arsenal have won yet another match in their season so far, this time in the Champions League against an extremely tough opponent, Napoli. Ever since the signing of former Real Madrid man, Mesut Özil, the Gunners have been unstoppable and have won every single match they have played with the German international in their side. In the past 22 Games, Arsene Wenger has managed to guide his team to 19 victories, 2 draws and only 1 loss, which was against Aston Villa in the opening game of this Premier League season.
At the beginning of the season, towards the end of the Transfer Window, Arsene Wenger was under fire from the Gunners fans for not buying anybody of note. The Frenchman soon realised he needed to do something soon, but he is not the manager to over pay for somebody who is not worth the money, so when news came in he was after Özil for £42.5 million, it shocked a few people. Özil had to be sold in order for Real Madrid to receive Gareth Bale, and it was genius by Wenger to jump on the deadline day opportunity as Özil is now the heart of this year’s Gunners squad.
Since signing for Arsenal, Özil has buried 1 goal in the Champions League in a 2-0 victory over Napoli; yet, as this may not sound impressive, his assisting stats are unbelievable. Now getting to be known as the King of Assists, Mesut Özil has set up or had a major part to play in every one of Arsenal’s goals so far this season. The German is a key part to this team and the way they are going so far this season, they are being compared to the old Arsenal team under Wenger known as ‘the Invincibles’, as they went undefeated for a whole season and won the Premier League title.
Arsenal played wonderfully last night in the Champions League as Özil scored his first goal for Arsenal, which was closely followed by a second goal by Olivier Giroud in a 2-0 win over Napoli. Elsewhere, Chelsea stormed their way to a dominant 4-0 triumph away to Steaua Bucharest whilst Barcelona edged a 1-0 win over 10 man Celtic. Last year’s finalists, Borussia Dortmund, steamroller over Marseille as AC Milan scored a last minute penalty to grab a point in a 1-1 draw to Ajax. Matches from other groups in the Champions League will be played tonight.
