Australia certainly retaliated against England’s win in Cardiff and reminded the home team just who they were up against at Lords! At the beginning of last week Captain Alistair Cook believed that his team could become too complacent following their lead and his visions of England buckling came to light, when Australia made the best start possible last Thursday. Having to declare twice rather than be taken out by England was possibly a highlight for Australia, and humiliating for the home team, as they battled to reach a virtually unachievable number of runs.
Australia will certainly want to hold on to the elation they must have felt at having ‘wiped the floor’ with their opponents. Having said that, England will most certainly be looking to redeem themselves. England’s coach Trevor Bayliss has made no secret of his disappointment in his batsmen. It has been decided that all his men will have to prove themselves to him if they are to make the squad facing Australia at Edgbaston. Bayliss has warned his team that they will all be watched very closely ahead of the selection meeting for the third test. The only exception to Bayliss’ warning could be Cook who scored a respectable 96 in his first innings.
Having won with a 405 lead over England, Australia will simply intend to carry on in the same fashion they began with at Lords. It was no mean feat to hold on to their wickets for as long as they did and hitting 300-1 can only be described as a dream start. The Away side didn’t start to lose wickets until Stuart Broad finally found his form and started to take out the rivals. Alistair Cook has backed his coach and said that changes will have to be made ahead of the next test; he has described his team’s poor efforts as simply unacceptable.
With the series back on an even footing the battle for The Ashes becomes as exciting as it was to begin with. Cricket fans up and down the country will all be asking the same questions. Who will make the squad? Who will win the toss? Can England find their form? All questions, that can only be answered later this week.
