The hosts for the most recent Ashes series, Australia have repeated what they managed to do somewhat 7 years ago as they have claimed a dominant whitewash victory over England on home soil. From the start of the series to the finish, England played terribly and did not even come close to winning a single test in the series losing by 381 runs, 218 runs, 150 runs, eight wickets and 281 runs. England looked as though they had already accepted defeat and were not bothered about losing by a whitewash, the wrong mentality to have.
Even the captain of the England squad, Alastair Cook spoke out about how bad his team performed by saying “if it was a boxing match it would have been stopped.” However, he continued to claim that never at any point did England throw in the towel, after it looked as though some players accepted defeat. The England coach, Andy Flower later revealed that he would like to stay on as the coach, despite there being speculation that he was set to leave. The Englishman believes that this bad performance against Australia gives his team something to work and improve on.
Following this dominating victory by Australia, the world rankings for cricket tests has changed vastly, with England falling far from the top spot. Going into the series at the end of November 2012, England looked the favourites as they were ranked the best in the world. Yet, in the space of just over 2 months and 5 terrible tests from the international side, their world number one ranking has been lost to South Africa. England have fallen to fourth in the world in Tests being overtaken by Australia, India and South Africa; England will hope that they quickly improve before everything goes downhill rapidly.
