Australian Open 2014 final preview

The first Grand Slam of the year is now coming to an end as there is only one weekend remaining of top class tennis play, therefore we will take a look at a preview of the singles Australian Open final line-ups. In a tournament that saw many players bow to the early heat wave in Australia, the line-up for the men’s and ladies’ finals are certainly not a predictable line-up. Looking ahead to the tournament before it ever started, many people believed that the finals were set to be Rafael Nadal vs Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams against one of the top players, either Sharapova or Azarenka, but that was not to be.

Australian Open 2014 has been the tournament of underdogs

The shocks were spread across the whole Australian Open tournament, but easily one of the biggest shocks was when Ana Ivanovic managed to knock the world number one Serena Williams out of the tournament in the fourth round. Ivanovic was then knocked out by 19 year old Canadian underdog Eugenie Bouchard, who had an unexpectedly impressive Grand Slam considering that she is much less experienced than her competitors. However, she was eliminated in the semis by Dominika Cibulkova, who will meet Li Na in the final. Cibulkova is only ranked number 24th in the world so it is a shock that she has reached the final, although Li Na is the clear favourite to win.

In the men’s side of the tournament, Novak Djokovic suffered a surprising loss to Stanislas Wawrinka in the quarter-finals as the Serbian lost his bid of winning a fourth consecutive Australian Open. Wawrinka then continued on through to the semis where he overcame Tomas Berdych to be another surprise finalist underdog. However, his opponent is no surprise as the men’s world number one Rafael Nadal will be a nightmare for the Swiss. Nadal is in top form defeating Roger Federer in a straight sets semi-final, but Wawrinka is very capable of causing an upset; it will be an unmissable final.
