Ben Stokes may not be fit

Ben Stokes may not be fit for England’s next test against Pakistan, according to captain Alistair Cook. Stokes missed out on training yesterday due to a stomach virus but will hopefully make a return to training later today.

Ben Stokes possibly out of the next test

England’s all-rounder, Ben Stokes, has proven himself to be crucial to the team by hitting a fifty and taking no less than four wickets in the first test, which resulted in a draw.

Speaking of his team mate Alistair Cook has admitted that he is uncertain as to whether or not the twenty four year old will have recovered enough to play. When he was asked the question he responded by saying:

“We’re not totally sure. He wasn’t well yesterday at all.”

Referring to the playing conditions he went on to say:

“In these conditions, it takes a lot of energy to perform at your peak. We’ll make a decision on Thursday morning.”

Ben Stokes has played in England’s last eleven matches. If it is decided that he is left out of the line up later in the week then fellow all-rounder Samit Patel may replace him.  Patel will provide Alistair Cook with a third spin option. Patel hasn’t played in a test match since 2012.

Speaking of his intentions and what the conditions of the wicket require Cook added:

“We said at the beginning of the tour that if the wicket demands three spinners, we will play three spinners. We’ve got that option and that wouldn’t really affect the balance of the side as all three of our spinners can bat.”

England’s rivals in the test, Pakistan, are said to be ready for the impending fixture. They are even expected to have their leg spinner, Yasir Shah, back on the team after he missed out on the first test due to issues with his back.

In recent history, Shah has taken no less than sixty one wickets across just ten test matches since his debut. Having Shah back on the team is a real threat to England especially if they are not all fully fit for the test. England will need to up their game no matter what the outcome for Ben Stokes!
