The final for the Champions League 2014 has officially been decided following last night’s semi-final match between Chelsea and Atletico Madrid at Stamford Bridge. The night before, Real Madrid sealed their first Champions League final place since 2002 as they managed to completely dominate the defending Champions of the European tournament and the German league, Bayern Munich. The final of the Champions League 2014, held in Lisbon on Saturday 24th May, is guaranteed to be a spectacular game as the Madrid rivalry will spur millions of people to tune in.
Last night’s semi-final was looking positive for Chelsea as the score on aggregate was 0-0 going into the second leg at their home ground, Stamford Bridge. It was looking even better when Fernando Torres gave the Blues a 1-0 lead in the first half; all Chelsea had to do was keep hold of that lead for the remainder of the match. However, Atletico Madrid finally found the form that has put them at the top of the Spanish league, La Liga, and swept the floor with the London based Chelsea. The final score ended up being 3-1 meaning Atletico Madrid booked their place in the final for the first time since 1974.
Real Madrid booked their place in the Champions League 2014 final by triumphing over the German champions, Bayern Munich, 5-0 on aggregate. Cristiano Ronaldo scored 2 goals in the second leg to break the record for the most goals scored in the Champions League in one season as he buried his 16th goal late in that semi-final. Real Madrid will now have to face their local rivals in the final for the biggest trophy in Club football. Never before has this fixture been held in the Champions League final, meaning the game will sure to be electrifying for spectators all around the world.
