Last night we learned which teams were set to be advancing to the last 16 of the Champions League and thankfully all of the English teams have advanced, something only matched by all of the German teams. However, Arsenal and Manchester City, who are advancing to the last 16 for the first time in their history, have a very good reason to be worried as they could draw some of the best teams in the competition. Both teams, the Gunners and the Citizens finished second in their Groups, but could have finished one better if they had a better result in the final group matches.
Arsenal unfortunately lost to Napoli 2-0 last night which meant that they finished their Champions’ League group campaign in second place on goal difference. Manchester City managed to defeat Bayern Munich 3-2, but they needed a 4-2 victory in order to top the table. Due to them finishing second, in very difficult groups may I add, it means that they both are set to play the winners of another group, therefore a very difficult side.
A Champions League last 16 draw on Monday will decide who each team will play; the Gunners and the Citizens both could draw Barcelona, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain or Athletico Madrid whilst Arsenal could also play Bayern Munich, and Man City could play Borussia Dortmund.
Manchester United and Chelsea, who both topped their Groups, have a slightly easier draw as the best team either of them could face will be Galatasaray. Arsenal certainly have the toughest draw as they could play either Barcelona, Real Madrid or Bayern Munich, which are said to be the best 3 teams in the world at the moment. Obviously nobody will have an easy game as it’s the Champions League, one of the best football competitions in the world which includes only the best teams.
