Europa League won by Chelsea

Rafael Benitez grabs Chelsea the Europa League trophy making history, as they are the first ever team to be holding both Europe titles; the Champions League and the Europa League. As all football fans would remember, last year Chelsea defeated big teams, such as Barcelona, on their way to the Champions League final where a late Drogba header gave them the victory against German kings Bayern Munich.

This time round was very similar, as they won the final in the 3rd minute of added time with a brilliant Branislav Ivanović header from a perfect Juan Mata corner, giving The Blues another season with another piece of silverware. The final score ended up to be 2-1 in Chelsea’s favour who took the lead twice, the first time through Fernando Torres on the hour mark. Benfica equalised 10 minutes later when Chelsea gave a penalty away which Oscar Cardozo managed to bury into the back of the net.

Rafael Benitez to leave even after winning Europa League

The former Liverpool manager, Rafael Benitez, is not very popular around the Chelsea fans due to previous experiences he had when he was at Liverpool, but he has led the London side to a major trophy triumph in the Europa League. The current Chelsea interim manager has already said that he will not be at the club next season, despite winning the Europa League and qualifying for next year’s Champions League this season. It is strongly believed that former Chelsea boss, Jose Mourinho, will come in to take the job, as Chelsea’s most successful reign was under the Portuguese manager.

Chelsea was the worse off team in the first half where Benfica had most of the possession but couldn’t turn chances into goals. The Blues came out in the second half and converted their chances ultimately winning the tournament. Chelsea manager Benitez commented after the match, “It is something you have got to be proud of as a manager. It was very tough. We knew Benfica were a good team, with their pushing and pressing. After half-time the reaction of the team was pretty good and that was the difference.”
