The Cheltenham Festivals total prize pot is set to be higher than ever this year. Collectively the winning sums equate to more than £4 million. This amount is a record offering. Entries and officials are said to be delighted with the values.
The growth in the Cheltenham Festival prize fund just proves how popular the festival is becoming. It is the biggest meet in the National Hunt calendar and numbers of visitors increase every year.
The largest increase comes on the back of a new sponsorship deal for the Cheltenham Gold Cup. Timico, a rapidly growing telecommunications company, was announced to be backing the pinnacle race last month.
The Jockey Club, who own Cheltenham amongst other courses, revealed that 13 of the 27 races included in the Cheltenham festival have had their prize funds increased with a total of £4,115,000 on offer over the four days. The sheer volume of monies on offer will almost certainly add to the buzz of excitement amongst the competitors at the Festival this March. The need to win has never been such a priority, because of this the racing will provide race goers with a spectacular show.
The total increase from last year’s prize in the Timico Gold Cup is a very respectable £25,000 taking the winnings from £550,000 to £575,000. Other races that have seen an increase in prize funds include the National Hunt Chase, which has gone up by £15,000 from last year’s figure of £85,000. The JLT Novices’ Chase now has a total prize pot of £130,000, up 8.33% on last year’s prize.
Simon Claisse, who is Director of racing and Cheltenham clerk of the course, has announced that Cheltenham is delighted to offer record prize money of over £4 million for the 2016 festival. He went on to reference the races with an air of positivity:
“The increase in prize-money to the National Hunt Chase means that all four novices’ chases will be worth at least £100,000, while we now also have three handicap chases matching these values. As previously announced, the Timico Cheltenham Gold Cup will be run for a record total prize fund of £575,000 this season, which consolidates its position as the most valuable Grade 1 chase anywhere in Britain.”
Due to the ever increasing popularity as well as this news, it is expected that the Festival will sell out across all days, and in every aspect. Tickets for the event and packages from Hospitality agents are in high demand. Some Hospitality companies have records sales and are already fully booked on certain days.
If you are planning on going to the Festival this year it is imperative that you secure a place as soon as possible. If you don’t have plans to attend why not make plans and be a part of what is set to be an extraordinary year at Cheltenham.
