Saracens’ top winger, Chris Ashton has revealed that his target is to make it back into the England starting line-up in time for their tour of New Zealand, which begins 7th June 2014. The English international side is set to play a total of four games; three of them will be against the full New Zealand All Blacks side whilst the other match will be against the Crusaders. This is the perfect test for England coach Stuart Lancaster to play around with his team and see what the best line-up is ahead of next year’s Rugby World Cup 2015, which England are hosting.
The English winger, Chris Ashton helped his side reach the Heineken Cup semi-final as he scored two tries in the quarter-final-final against Ulster. He has scored a total of 9 tries in the Heineken Cup so far this season and is one try away from equalling the record of most tries scored in the Heineken Cup in one season. Ashton hopes to score more points in order to book his side in their first ever Heineken Cup final. Saracens, who are also top of the Aviva Premiership by 9 points, will play Clermont Auvergne in their semi-final match.
Chris Ashton, who has played for his international side 37 times already, commented on regaining his international place, “I’m a great believer in everything happening for a reason. I’ve got a couple of games left this season to put my hand up, and get back involved in New Zealand. Last time I spoke to Stuart Lancaster, he said it’s in my hands to get involved. New Zealand’s going to be a tough tour, and you want to be involved in that in the build up to the World Cup. I’m enjoying rugby again. I’m only 27, I’d like to think I’m heading in to my prime and I’ve got a lot to offer still.”
