After an extremely disappointing World Cup in Brazil, England managed to get off to a great start in the qualifiers for the Euro 2016 tournament, after they triumphed over Switzerland in their own country. For the first time since March 2013, the English international football team have managed to win a competitive match that has been hosted outside of England. The English needed to perform at their very best and come out with a positive result following the abysmal World Cup and Welbeck helped his country do that in style.
This match up against Switzerland is easily England’s toughest match in their Group as they still have to face San Marino, Estonia, Lithuania and Slovenia. Roy Hodgson had a tough decision to make just before kick-off as England’s star striker Daniel Sturridge was out injured. This forced the new captain, Wayne Rooney to play in the striking position alongside Danny Welbeck, with Raheem Sterling playing behind the duo. This worked a treat as the new £16million Arsenal man Welbeck scored 2 goals in the 58th and 90th minute to give his side the victory.
After triumphing over Switzerland, who are ranked 9th in the world, 11 places ahead of England, Roy Hodgson commented, “It was a bold approach but we decided there was no point coming here for a 0-0, we want this team to progress. When we can counter-attack, the pace, energy and youth of the team is shown.” The England boss continued, “Yes the World Cup didn’t go our way, yes we have been disappointed, but we have been building up. We didn’t hit a brick wall and it was all wrong, we had to maintain faith that we are on the right track and we are getting the right players. It was so important to get a good start against the team who are our biggest rivals in the group.”
