The FA Cup 2015 returns this weekend for the fifth round as the top 3 teams should all advance, but in the FA Cup, as we learned in the previous round, anything can happen. In the previous fourth round, we saw many shocks and surprises as the big teams were eliminated by the underdogs. The Premier League leaders and FA Cup favourites, Chelsea suffered a defeat they would much rather forget as Bradford won 4-2 at Stamford Bridge. Manchester City were knocked out with a 2-0 defeat by Middlesbrough at the Etihad Stadium, whilst Tottenham failed to advance after losing at home to Leicester.
The only big teams that are still in the competition are Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United. Even those top teams struggled last round as Liverpool and Manchester United needed replays against Bolton and Cambridge respectively, whilst Arsenal only won narrowly by a score of 3-2 against Brighton. Yet, that’s the beauty of the FA Cup, it’s so unpredictable, anything can happen. In the fifth round, the big teams are expected to advance as Manchester United travel to Preston, Arsenal host Middlesbrough and Liverpool play Crystal Palace away.
The other matches should also prove to be exciting as the fixtures look well matched. The main fixture of the weekend is set to be held at Villa Park as Aston Villa take on Leicester City. On Wednesday, the Villains revealed that they relieved their manager, Paul Lambert, of his duties after scoring only 12 goals in 25 Premier League games this season. Now the big question is, will Aston Villa improve with Lambert gone? The first-team coach Scott Marshall and goalkeeping coach Andy Marshall have taken over until the club find a permanent manager.
