Aston Villa will take on Arsenal this Saturday in the FA cup final at Wembley Stadium, with both teams facing some sleepless nights beforehand.
Though marred by injury problems this season, Christian Benteke looks to be back to his best, having scored 12 goals in the past 12 games, which is likely to spread some fear amongst the Arsenal ranks ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup final. On the subject, Villa midfielder Ashley Westwood said, “Christian is a real handful for anyone. He’s back to his best now, bullying defenders.”
Arsenal are bidding to become the first team since Chelsea in 2010 to win successive FA cups, a journey that began with a 2-0 win over Hull City. Mertesacker and Sanchez were the heroes for this matchup. The London side’s first big test came in the form of a quarter-final matchup against Manchester United. Arsenal’s woes at Old Trafford are well documented by ex-united striker Danny Welbeck put his team 2-1 up on the hour mark, sending his team one step closer to the FA Cup final.
It took an extra time session for the Gunners to see Reading off in the semi-final, after a 106th minute winner from Chilean Alexis Sanchez. They have won the FA cup a record 11 times, a feat shared with Manchester United, which they seek to change this Saturday.
Aston Villa’s FA Cup record is nothing to be ashamed of either – the midlands team have won the trophy 7 times – however, the last time was in 1957, when they beat Manchester United 2-1.
This season’s FA Cup campaign began with an 88th minute winner from Christian Benteke in a tense clash with Blackpool. Interestingly, most of Villa’s winning goals have been rather late on in the matches, which could make for an interesting game this Saturday. They faced a real test against Liverpool in the Semi-final, after going 1-0 down to a 30th-minute Coutinho goal, before coming back to win 2-1.
