FA Cup throws up a shock as Wigan win

In the Premier League, Wigan are in the bottom three of the table and fighting to stay up whilst their FA Cup final opponents, Manchester City are in second place and on their way to next year’s Champions League. Yet, the underdogs who were Wigan, managed to cause a huge upset in Manchester as they grabbed a late injury time goal to put them ahead and win the game.

Roberto Martinez sent his side out at the beginning of the game with an attacking frame of mind and Manchester City found themselves shocked at how well the relegation candidates played. Before the match, Manchester City unsurprisingly found themselves to be the clear favourites, but on the pitch Wigan managed to match, and even out class Manchester City.

Wigan had an advantage towards the end of the match as the Sky Blues’ right back; Pablo Zabaleta managed to get himself sent off via two yellow cards in the last six minutes which gave Wigan the positivity to go forward for the victory. Substitute, Ben Watson, was the man who managed to head home for Wigan, immediately after the electrical board had gone up to say three minutes added time, giving Wigan their first major trophy in their history.

In the build-up to the FA Cup final there was speculation about both managers. There was talk that Mancini was on his way to get sacked and now possibly be replaced by the Malaga boss Manuel Pellegrini.

Whilst on the other hand, Roberto Martinez was linked with Everton as David Moyes has agreed to sign up for the manager role at Manchester United next season, due to Sir Alex Fergusons retirement. This FA Cup loss for Mancini has given him an even bigger chance of being fired ending a season with no silverware, whilst the win for Martinez could make Everton want him even more.

Despite this massive FA Cup victory, Roberto Martinez must find a way to keep his players calm for the final two games of the season, as they need to win both if they want to stay in the Premier League. However, the first of the two games, on Tuesday night, is against Arsenal which is an extremely tough match, but they have now proven they can defeat the big teams, so will have lots of confidence.

It could go down to the last day where they are set to play fellow strugglers Aston Villa. If Wigan can triumph both of their remaining games, they could stay up and send the West Midlands side down to the Championship.
