Now is the big chance for certain Premier League football clubs to try and break away from their surrounding rivals as Chelsea, Manchester City and Wigan are playing in the FA Cup semi-final. This weekend the FA Cup is holding its semi-finals at Wembley and the games are Chelsea vs Manchester City and Wigan vs Millwall giving some Premier League clubs the perfect opportunity to put pressure on those FA Cup semi-finalists in the league.
As the Premier League comes to its final stages of the season, after this weekend Wigan will be under immense pressure being 2 games behind their opposition. This could be interpreted as an advantage by knowing what their surrounding teams have on points and planning how to catch them up. However, having games in hand means that Wigan will have to play later on in the season in mid-week giving the players minimal rest. If their players are tired then they won’t play well meaning they could lose extremely valuable points late in the season.
At the other end of the table, Manchester United has a chance to extend their lead to 15 points again whilst the Sky Blues take on Chelsea in the FA Cup. The Red Devils will face Stoke away on Sunday which could be an easily winnable match considering Stoke City’s poor performances of late. Then again, the Potters should never be ruled out when playing at home. The Midlands side are recovering from a tough defeat from Aston Villa who dragged them down into the relegation battle via an unbelievable 35 yard screamer from Matthew Lowton; Stoke City must come away against Man United with something.
Arsenal are looking to overtake their local rivals, Tottenham Hotspur, in the chase for a Champions League spot as Spurs do not play this weekend due to their scheduled match against Chelsea being postponed thanks to the FA Cup. Liverpool do have an outside chance of getting in the Champions League qualifying positions and in order to keep their dream alive they will have to defeat bottom of the league Reading on Saturday. Queens Park Rangers (QPR) will look towards applying more pressure on Wigan by triumphing over their opponents Everton which is a very tough game.
The football match to watch on Sunday, which could change the bottom of the league dramatically, is the match between Newcastle and Sunderland being played at the home of the Geordies. Sunderland have recently appointed their new manager, Paolo Di Canio, who lost his first match in charge last week against Chelsea but he will now have had proper training time with his team and knows the players better. If he can manage to grab a win against Newcastle, Sunderland will pull themselves to only 2 points behind their opponents tugging Alan Pardew’s men deep down into the relegation battle. It’s a tight fight this year with most of the bottom half teams all having a chance of being relegated, but who will stay up?
