The Grand National entries have been revealed for the Aintree race that will take place on April 5th 2014 and there is a dramatic rise in the number of horses taking part. There are 31 additional entries included compared to the figure last year. This is the highest amount of horses entered into the race since 2009, when 123 horses were entered. There is no surprise as to why there are so many entries, the prize money is now at a record £1million. With the prize money being such a vast sum, the Crabbie’s Grand National is now one of the richest races in the world and is the most valuable race in all of Europe.
One of the biggest names in the horse racing industry at the moment, Long Run has been entered into the Grand National 2014, but the 9 year old has fallen out of form recently. After winning many of his races early on in his career, Long Run failed to win a single race in the whole of 2013 and even unseated his rider in his most recent contest. However, his trainer Nicky Henderson, who has never won the Grand National before, believes that his horse is capable of coming back from his downfall in 2014 and winning the Aintree race in April.
Last year’s Grand National champion, the 66-1 shot Auroras Encore will not be defending his title this year, as he has been retired due to an injury where he fractured his leg. However, last year’s third position Teaforthree and sixth position Swing Bill are both in the entries again as they bid to win the title on their second attempt. Sue Smith, the trainer of Auroras Encore, has entered Mr Moonshine and Vintage Star in hope they repeat that year’s triumph for their trainer. The joint favourites for this year’s Grand National are Monbeg Dude and Triolo D’Alene who have odds of 20-1.
