Great Britain Team Praise New Coach

Great Britain now have a 3-0 win in group c of the completion. Both Heather Watson and Johanna Konta won in their singles matches. Jocelyn Rae and Laura Robson were able to claim victory over their opponents.

The Women will progress to matches against Latvia, today, and then Turkey on Friday. The winners of those matches will go on to face the group B victors this weekend in a play-off.  Whoever manages to come out on top this weekend, will then go through to the World Group 2 play-off’s in the spring.

Great Britain are currently seeded third out of fourteen nations and first in their group.

Up first for GB was Heather Watson who managed to secure victory in a match that lasted almost an hour. She led the game and ended with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Ines Murta. Johanna Konta later managed to win 6-2, 6-4 against her opponent Micelle Larcher de Brito.

In the final match of the round duet Jocelyn Rae and Laura Robson worked well together to beat De Brito and Murta 6-2 6-3 in their doubles match.

Speaking out after her game Konta explained that she was extremely happy with the outcome of such a high level match. She went on to say that her form improved as time went on. She did have to work for the win, as she was put through her paces by her opponent, but fortunately her efforts paid off, and she achieved the desired result. Hopefully now the team can progress and return to the courts increasing their strength day by day.

The world number ten paid tribute to new captain, Anne Keothavong. She replaced Judy Murray last year. Konta believes that she is doing a great job of making sure that they work together as a team. Part of the new coach’s methods, are to make sure that they all socialise and bond in the evenings.

Heather Watson explained that her match was the first since the Austalian Open. She was very happy with the way that she played and is pleased to have the first win for team GB in the bag. Watson also spoke highly of Keothavong, stating that she will continue to do a great job and that she was really enjoying the time that they had spent together so far.
