Silverstone saw Lewis Hamilton take the title of British Grand prix champion, last Sunday. In a race that looked as though it might see the Mercedes driver lose out to the competition, the young phenomenon defied the odds.
Although Hamilton had secured pole position, the race didn’t start well. Into the first laps both Hamilton and his team mate looked set to take up a lesser position but caught up at the first pit stop. The conditions didn’t worry the Mercedes star, but he did comment that he found the race to be a challenge, he pointed out that this just made it more exciting.
Following the outburst of rain from yesterday’s turbulent weather Hamilton’s position was again threatened when he was forced to decide on a later pit stop due to wet tires. His final stop was his own call, he left the pit stop knowing that he still had to fight his way around the track for a further nine laps in wet conditions. Despite this, he raced ahead and went on to win the title for Britain and for his team.
The Young and extremely talented driver spoke out following the win. He stated that the crowd cheering spurred him on and that he was using them to ensure that he didn’t let go of his position on the track. Hamilton also made reference to his feeling of elation when he realised he was going to win the race, he commented following the win and referred to the crowds:
“I’m so elated. You can’t imagine how happy I am. I was tearing up on the last lap, just really hoping I could hold onto it for you guys and, man, I felt you all the way.”
The British Grand prix win was Hamilton’s third victory at Silverstone and his fifth win of the year.
