Harris English wins the St. Jude Classic

Harris English prevailed this weekend in the St. Jude Classic to win his first PGA Tour trophy and he did so in style, defeating the likes of Phil Mickelson. Harris English had the advantage of his friends cheering him on but more importantly, he had veteran caddie Brian Smith there to guide English to the winning putt. It went right down to the wire in this tournament but English was the one who pulled it out of the bag, making two birdies in the final three holes, beating Mickelson and Scott Stallings to the trophy.

It was the final 3 holes which were key in this tournament – on the 16th, Scott Stallings was in the lead, closely followed by English. It was only when English made a birdie on the 16th and Stallings flopped on the 18th hole to disappointingly card a bogey when English took the lead. Knowing that he was at the top, English skilfully birdied the 17th hole and calmly wrapped up the tournament with a two-putt on the final hole to take home the large cheque of $1,026,000.

Harris English wins first PGA Tour Title

Harris English is only the fourth player to win this event in his first start in it since the tournament moved to TPC Southwind in 1989 after Dustin Johnson became the third player only last year. Before English joined the PGA Tour he was grabbing the attention of golfers around the globe with victories in the Southern Amateur in 2011 and the Tour also in 2011. English then decided to join the PGA Tour in 2012 and has now just won his first PGA Tour title this weekend.

English commented after his St. Jude Classic triumph, “I really didn’t think I’d be in this seat right here coming off 9. I thought I kind of made some really dumb bogeys on eight, nine and kind of shot myself out of the tournament. But Smitty (his caddie) was saying, ‘Hey let’s go beat this back nine. Let’s get back under par for the tournament for the day, and let’s get after it.’ So it was almost pedal to the metal.” Harris then finished off by saying, “It’s quite an unbelievable feeling.”
