Sweden’s Henrik Stenson has been handed the European Tour’s Golfer of the Year Award after dominating this season, topping the European Tour rankings with 4,086,936 points. In the Final Race to Dubai rankings, Stenson was easily top, followed by England’s Ian Poulter and Justin Rose who finished second and third with 2,969,469 and 2,776,244 points respectively. Closely following them in the Rankings were Northern Ireland’s Graeme McDowell (2,512,696 points) and Wales’ Jamie Donaldson (2,181,113 points), which rounded off the top 5 players.
At the beginning of the year, the Swedish Golfer was ranked outside of the top 50 in the world rankings. However, following his recent fantastic form, he is now placed as the world number three, behind only Tiger Woods and Adam Scott who occupy the top and second spot respectively. Henrik Stenson managed to clinch both the Race to Dubai and FedEx Cup in the same year, the first man to ever to do so. Stenson also had a successful attempt in two Majors as he finished third in the PGA Championships and runner-up in The Open this year.
Henrik Stenson commented on winning the European Tour’s Golfer of the Year Award, “It is a big honour to be voted Race to Dubai golfer of the year. It just reflects the stellar year I have had. You can call it a dream season, the year of my life, whatever you want. It has been an unbelievable year and I’m delighted to win the award especially as I’m the first Swede to do so. You look at the past winners of the award and most of the greats of European golf are on there, which just adds to the prestige of winning it.”
