Chelsea have had to say good bye to one of their long standing team members, as Midfielder John Mikel Obi, leaves the London club to play in the Chinese Super league. The twenty nine year old will now feature on the team sheets for Tianjin TEDA.
John Mikel Obi has been a feature at Chelsea since 2006 when he began his career at the premiership club. Originally from Nigeria, Mikel has represented Chelsea on the pitch on 372 separate occasions. However he hasn’t been selected to play for the Blues so far this season.
In a move that may not come as a surprise to Chelsea fans Mikel has decided that it is definitely time for him to move on. In a press announcement he stated that it had been an honour to play for Chelsea, but that he was now on the lookout for a new challenge.
In the decade that he has spent at Stamford Bridge Mikel, has won the FA Cup on four separate occasions, he has also won two Premiership titles.
In a message that went out to his fans on twitter the midfielder wrote:
“I haven’t featured as much this season as I would have liked and I still have many years in the game ahead of me, With this in mind, I feel now is the time to seek a new challenge.”
Mikel went on to express that he was looking forward to new challenges at Tianjin TEDA FC, especially at a time when the Chinese Super League is increasing in popularity.
Showing his appreciation for the time he spent playing in the Premier League, he stated that it was an honour to have been able to fulfil every professional player’s ambition. Playing for a club as prolific as Chelsea has provided the star with opportunities that have enabled him to work alongside, and in opposition to, some of the World’s greatest players
Mikel is not the only player that Chelsea have seen make a move into the Chinese Super League recently. Oscar dos Santos transferred to Shanghai SIPG in a controversial move last month.
