Jose Mourinho signs four-year contract with Chelsea

Jose Mourinho returns to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge for a second time in his impressive career after Real Madrid and the Portuguese manager parted ways last month. Jose Mourinho was one of the many managers that the Chelsea owner, Roman Abramovich, has departed with but he is now the only one to return to the Blues whilst under Abramovich’s reign. Mourinho has always been liked by the Chelsea fans and is very popular in that part of London after he won the Premier League twice with the club.

Jose Mourinho first arrived on the scene at Chelsea during the summer of 2004, when he won the Champions League with his previous club, Porto FC. The Champions League was the one tournament that Roman Abramovich had always wanted to win but Mourinho could not capture that particular trophy for the Blues. However, despite not being crowned the kings of Europe, the ‘Special One’ managed to lead the Blues to 2 Premier League titles, 2 League Cups and 1 FA Cup in 3 seasons, yet he still left with 3 years of his contract remaining.

Jose Mourinho returns to a place he is ‘loved’

It was understood that Mourinho and Abramovich did not get on very well towards the end of the 2007 season and this was the reason Mourinho left and was replaced by Avram Grant. Mourinho carried on to win the Champions League with Inter Milan in 2010 before he left for Real Madrid. He led the Spanish team to the La Liga title last season but couldn’t manage to get them the Champions League trophy. The Portuguese manager ended up rowing with key players such as Casillas, Ramos and Pepe leading to a failed season finishing second in the La Liga.

Chelsea’s Chief executive, Ron Gourlay commented, “He was and remains a hugely popular figure at the club and everyone here looks forward to working with him again. I am delighted to welcome Jose back to Chelsea. His continued success, drive and ambition made him the outstanding candidate. It is our aim to keep the club moving forward to achieve greater success in the future and Jose is our number one choice as we believe he is the right manager to do just that.”
