Laura Robson in third round of US Open

Britain’s number one women’s tennis player, Laura Robson survived a tough and tight match against a fellow 19 year old who put up a good fight against the Brit. The British player has a bright future ahead of her. Robson managed to triumph over France’s Caroline Garcia in straight sets despite having trouble, ending the match quickly. After Laura Robson won the first set, the second set proved much tighter. Both Players managed to break and Robson saved two set points in order to take it to a tie-break, which the young Briton then won.

Laura Robson now faces a repeat of last year where she played against Li Na in the third round of the tournament. The same draw was made again this year. Last year, it was one of the biggest shocks of the tournament as the then 18 year old managed to strike down the top 10 competitor. Yet, this year it might not cause such a shock. Robson is quickly establishing herself as a tennis player who has serious potential and can cause upset to her opponents.

Laura Robson is suffering with a wrist worry

For a couple of weeks now the 19 year old British number one has had an injury problem with her right wrist and it has kept her out of action in the build-up to this US Open at Flushing Meadows. There was worry in the crowd when Laura Robson had to stop play during her second round victory for an injury break where she was seen to apply more tape to the wrist and take some pain killers. Yet the injury didn’t seem to hinder her playing ability as she managed to hit her shots with her usual skill.

Both sets were extremely similar in terms of being close, the first set was only set apart from the second, when Laura Robson chose the perfect moment to strike and pull off a break, at a crucial time when everyone thought a tie-break was on the cards. With the score at 5-4 in favour of Robson, she managed to return Garcia’s serve smoothly and without trouble. This broke her opponent and enabled her to grab the one set advantage. From then on, the next set was very even. The set remained so until the tie-break.  Laura Robson, yet again, pounced in the last minute to advance into the next round of the US Open.

Laura Robson commented after she reached the third round, “I thought I played really well and I served really well, and I’m looking forward to the next round. I think she’s a great player and she’s had some tough matches in the past, where she should have won and nerves have got to her. That’s kind of what I was focusing on at the end of the second set when she was serving for it; try to play aggressive and let her get a bit nervous.”
