This Saturday holds one of the largest and most anticipated horse racing events of the year at Aintree Racecourse in Liverpool – the Grand National. Liverpool has estimated that they are going to take in around £36 million from the hospitality industry thanks to the Grand National Festival, an event watched nationwide with thousands placing bets on their favourite horses.
Roughly 150,000 people are set to spend about £27 million pounds over the next three days at Aintree Racecourse in Liverpool on food, drink and bets. An additional £9 million will be spent in hotels, restaurants and Liverpool city centre and other shops surrounding Aintree and Liverpool. Officials at Aintree have predicted that the opening day will be record-breaking due to musical performances from famous artists The Saturdays, District 3 and Escala during and after the day’s racing.
The build up for the Grand National has been growing with more and more people talking about it. No surprise then, that in the past week, all of the regular tickets have sold out, leaving people who want to go the only option of buying a hospitality ticket.
The head of the visitor economy at Visit Liverpool, Pam Wilsher, commented, “It’s easy to get complacent because it happens every year, but the Grand National is a mega-event in the calendar and really kicks off the spring and summer for Liverpool. I think it’s going to be a bumper year. It will depend on the weather but usually about 150,000 people attend.”
Mike Dewey, chairman of the Liverpool Hoteliers Association and manager of the Hard Day’s Night Hotel stated, “I had a meeting with a number of hoteliers this week and Thursday is very strong this year. Traditionally Friday and Saturday are the busiest, so it is very encouraging to see Thursday doing so well. It’s hard to say why. They have put The Saturdays on Thursday night, it could be that. I really don’t know, but I am certainly not complaining and nor are the other hotels.”
Around this time of the year most citizens of the United Kingdom make sure they have this prestigious event in their calendar and most likely will place bets as it is one of the most exciting races of the year. Every year the Grand National Festival boosts the UK economy and brings plenty of tourism to Liverpool – however, this year could easily be a record-breaking year.
