Manchester City defeat rivals in title chase

Last night held one of the most crucial football matches of the season for Manchester City as they managed to reduce the point difference between themselves and the current leaders Chelsea. Not only was this match important in the table for the Sky Blues, but also for the bragging rights against their local rivals, Manchester United. It was the derby that everyone had been looking forward to as the Red Devils hosted the Sky Blues at Old Trafford. However, the hosts couldn’t manage to get City’s Edin Dzeko under control as he led his team to a rampant 3-0 triumph.

Manchester City have the advantage in the Premier League

It didn’t take long before Manchester City broke the Red Devils’ defence as Dzeko slotted home a shot that rebounded off the post into his path to put his team ahead by one goal in only 43 seconds. That lead was doubled in the 56th minute by Dzeko before Yaya Toure buried a last minute goal to rub salt in the wounds of their arch rival, Manchester United. This loss has kept David Moyes’ side outside of the top 6 positions in the Premier League whilst Manchester City managed to overtake Liverpool, who must play Sunderland tonight at Anfield.

This victory has given Manchester City a real boost in confidence as they overcame their local rivals and are only 3 points behind Chelsea, with 2 games in hand. This means that if the Sky Blues do not lose a single game from now until the end of the season, they will definitely regain the top title. However, Manuel Pellegrini’s team do have a difficult couple of matches before the end of the season as they must still play Arsenal and Liverpool, which could hinder their chances of winning the title.

Following last night’s fantastic triumph, Manchester City’s manager Pellegrini commented, “It was important because it was one of the three big matches we still have to play. I am not thinking about the title but we fight with the other three teams. We continue recovering points on Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal, so it was very important to keep adding points. It was an important win against a great team like Manchester United. You’ll never know how many points you’ll need.”
