Manchester United relied on their number one striker who was the highest goal scorer of last season, Robin van Persie, as he hit home 2 goals at Wembley on Sunday against Wigan to give his new manager, David Moyes, his first piece of United Silverware, the Community Shield. David Moyes managed to sweep aside all of the news about the possible move of Wayne Rooney and put his mind set on the first victory of the season. However, Wayne Rooney was left out of the team and wasn’t even on the substitute bench, what could this mean?
The Manchester United English forward, Wayne Rooney, has been at the centre of the transfer window gossip for the Red Devils and Chelsea, who have said that the England international is their only target. Chelsea have had two bids turned down by Moyes, the Scotsman has claimed that Rooney is not for sale. Moyes said he needs him in case Robin van Persie picks up an injury, which Rooney was far from happy about. Although Rooney has claimed he wants to leave, he needs to start pushing for it, in order to outwardly convey how he truly feels.
It wasn’t long in the Community Shield match until the Red Devils took the lead with their star signing, which proved to be the difference last year. Van Persie put his team one goal ahead, when on the six minute mark, he got his head on the end of a cross and from just inside the box and curled a powerful header into the bottom left corner of the goal. It looked as though it was going to be a long day for Wigan, the Championship side. Yet, at times the Latics played some skilful football which could be key to them gaining promotion straight away.
After the half time break, it wasn’t long before United grabbed their second goal through the Dutchman van Persie yet again. Only this time it wasn’t a fabulous goal in his usual style, instead it was a deflected shot which caught the Wigan goalkeeper wrong footed and sealed the win for the Red Devils. This was the first managerial honour success for David Moyes since he led Preston North End to the Division Two title in 2000, he hopes it is the first of many.
David Moyes didn’t fully claim this as his first Manchester United title, he commented, “I class that as another piece of silverware for Sir Alex. It was his team that won the league by 13-15 points so it’s his team. The titles going forward will be down to me. Wilfried Zaha has done well in pre-season and it was right for him to feature today. He picked up an injury, but we are looking forward to using him as the season goes on.”
The gossip surrounding Manchester United will certainly turn back to Wayne Rooney. He was apparently injured with a shoulder problem so missed out on the Community Shield, but he will play on Wednesday for England. The question floating around in the football world is, do Rooney and Moyes have a feud? And will Rooney push to leave Manchester United?
