Former tennis world number one, who currently occupies the world number three spot, Maria Sharapova has been revealed as the highest paid female athlete of the past year, making more than the current world’s best, Serena Williams. It was the sport of tennis that has dominated the leader board as seven of the top 10 women who earn the most money were tennis players as they also occupied the top 4 spots. The list is based on their winnings and earnings in the sport along with the amount of money they get through endorsements.
It is no secret that Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams are always in feisty competition which is usually on the tennis courts. In matches played on the tennis court, Serena Williams, who is said to be the best female tennis player to have ever graced the game, is dominating the head to head stats. Overall, they have played 16 matches against each other and Williams has won 14 of those contests, winning the last 13 in a row against the Russian. Yet, when the competition comes to who earns the most money, Maria Sharapova is the one who dominates.
In total earnings for the past year, Maria Sharapova has earned £18.6 million with the majority of that being down to her endorsements from the likes of massive sportswear company, Nike. Serena Williams has earned £13.2 million overall in the past year, earning considerably less than Sharapova in endorsements but slightly more in prize money. In the all-time career earnings, so only the money she wins from tennis tournaments, Maria Sharapova sits in third place, behind both of the Williams sisters, Serena and Venus Williams.
Whilst Maria Sharapova was the highest paid female athlete, she had nothing on the highest paid man, Tiger Woods, who earned a staggering £50.2 million during 2012 – 2013. Tiger Woods earns an unbelievable £41.7 million in endorsements which is a massive part of his earnings. Just behind Tiger Woods is tennis star Roger Federer who earns the same as Woods in endorsements, but earns overall just under £46 million. In the men’s list, the top 10 list includes players who play American Football, Basketball, Golf, Tennis and Football (Soccer).
Phil Mickelson is ranked as the 7th highest paid behind 2 NFL and 2 NBA players. Behind Mickelson sits 3 world famous footballers, David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, who sit 8th, 9th and 10th place in the world respectively. In the women’s list, the sports included are Tennis, NASCAR, Figure Skating and Golfing, with tennis players Maria Sharapova, Serena Williams, Li Na and Victoria Azarenka occupying the top 4 places.
