Mercedes drivers Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg have revealed that they both believe this season, which begins this weekend at the Australian Grand Prix, will be just as fiery as last season. All of last season, the two drivers were leading the races and fighting against each other for the victories; at times the rivalry became extremely heated. Lewis Hamilton managed to claim the Championship title at the end of the year. The duo believe that this season will be similar to the previous year and agree that Mercedes will dominate again.
There were 2 incidents between the team-mates last season, which really grabbed attention amongst the media and formula 1 fans, in the Monaco Grand Prix and the Belgian Grand Prix. In Monaco, Rosberg went off the track during qualifying, this resulted in the German stealing pole position from Hamilton, something the Englishman wasn’t happy about. In the Belgian Grand Prix, the duo collided whilst fighting for first place during the second lap; this soon led to Hamilton being forced to retire from the race. Mercedes decided this was Rosberg’s fault and fined the German after the race.
Mercedes will allow the pair to race freely this season, just as long as they don’t collide with each other again. Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff commented, “The situation is different. Last year the pressure was very big to win the championship and we were very keen on scoring in every single race. The pressure is still there but it’s maybe a more relaxed approach this year. It was a very conscious decision to let them fight and we’re going to have the same approach. We have spent a lot of time talking about it. We have looked at the many critical situations from last year. But then it would be very naïve to think it’s not happening again this year.”
