Finally, the Premier League has returned for what will promise to be another exhilarating season after the first weekend of top notch football has passed. We saw David Moyes take charge of his first Premier League fixture for Manchester United and saw the return of the ‘Special One’, Jose Mourinho as Chelsea took on Hull City on the Sunday. As per usual, there were some shock results, and some quite predictable results throughout the weekend, with still one more match to play tonight between Manchester City and Newcastle, then week one will officially be over.
At 20:00 tonight, we will get to see how the new Manchester City manager, Manuel Pellegrini, will get on against the Geordies in his first ever Premier League match as a manager. The Sky Blues have spent near enough £90 million on new signings and have got rid of players who were certainly goal scorers, such as Carlos Tévez. Nevertheless, the Chilean manager has bought in Stevan Jovetic, Álvaro Negredo, Fernandinho and Jesús Navas for a combined total of around £86.9 million and we will see how they got on in their first Premier League match together tonight.
Anfield had the pleasure of hosting the first Premier League game of the season as Liverpool took on Stoke City, whose goal keeper stopped them from having an embarrassing score line. Yet the new Liverpool keeper, Simon Mignolet, also had a game changing save to make at the end of the match. Daniel Sturridge managed to score the opening goal of the season with a beautiful strike from just outside the box to give the Reds the lead. Liverpool chances were kept out by Stoke’s keeper, Asmir Begović, until Stoke had a penalty in the dying embers of the game; luckily Mignolet saved it to give Liverpool 3 points.
After the early kick-off at Anfield, the rest of the Premier League matches got underway as there was a massive shock at the Emirates with Arsenal taking on a relegation candidate last year, Aston Villa. The Gunners have not bought in anybody on real note and looked as though it didn’t matter as Giroud put Arsenal 1-0 up in the first 5 minutes of the match. Then it went downhill for the home side as 2 penalties later and a red card left the Gunners a man down and 2-1 down. Soon enough, a third goal was added by the Villa left back, Antonio Luna, and by then the home fans were far from happy. The travelling away fans were ecstatic on the way home to the Midlands.
On the other hand, the Manchester United fans were delighted with David Moyes’ first game in charge in the Premier League away to Swansea, a tough place to visit. Robin van Persie and Danny Welbeck both got 2 goals each to send the Red Devils to a convincing 4-1 victory in Wales. Robin van Persie scored a special weak footed volley for his first goal which was arguably competing for the goal of the game against Welbeck’s cheeky chip, which was delightful.
The final game of the weekend sparked the return to the Premier League for Jose Mourinho who sent out a warning to the Premier League Champions with a dominant 2-0 victory over Hull City. The 2-0 score line was modest as it could have been many more, but Chelsea only managed to get Oscar to poke in a goal and their trusted veteran midfielder, Frank Lampard, to smash home a wonderful free-kick from a place he had no right to shoot from. A great win for Chelsea whose fans will be over the moon the ‘Special One’ has returned.
