Rafael Nadal is certainly a man on form as he stormed his way through to the quarter-finals of the US Open by triumphing over Philipp Kohlschreiber, in the last 16 of the final Grand Slam of the year. The ideal plan was for Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer to be playing each other in the quarter-final of the American Grand Slam, but unfortunately for tennis fans, the clash will not happen after Roger Federer suffered yet another upset. The Swiss 5 time US Open Champion was knocked out in the last 16 by Tommy Robredo, a shocking loss for Federer.
Rafael Nadal will be celebrating Federer’s loss as he now stands better chance of reaching the semi-finals now the former world number one has been eliminated. This year has thrown up some serious shocks in Grand Slams so Nadal must be careful and must not go into the quarter-final thinking it will be an easy ride. Tommy Robredo knocked out Great Britain’s Dan Evans before he saw off Roger Federer, so he is a talented player capable of defeating average players, and greats.
Rafael Nadal was not in any danger in the first set as he easily kept up with Philipp Kohlschreiber exchanging game after game until the tie-break. The Spaniard then lost the tie-break and went one set down which sparked something in the world number two’s attitude as he then went on to completely dominate his opponent. As the match continued, Nadal’s play went from strength to strength. He won the second set 6-4, then the third 6-3 and the final set was all the Spaniard as he allowed Kohlschreiber only a 1 game victory. The final score was 6-7 (4-7) 6-4 6-3 6-1 to Nadal.
After the last 16 victory, Rafael Nadal admitted that he realised that himself and Roger Federer have limited time to play each other in the world’s largest tennis stadium, the Arthur Ashe Stadium. The Spaniard said that both of them are getting older and the chances of them meeting on the main US Open stadium are getting slimmer. However, Nadal looks forward to playing Robredo as he has a 6-0 win to loss against the fellow Spaniard.
Rafael Nadal talked about his upcoming opponent after his match, “I’m happy to see him come back after injury… he’s playing a very good tournament, he will come to my match with confidence, and I hope I will be ready.” He continued, “The players who are ready for the work and are ready to fight the tough obstacles that the competition brings you are the players that at the end of the season are in the best position in the rankings,” Nadal said about Robredo, his older compatriot.
