Rio Ferdinand signs deal at Manchester United

Speculation about Rio Ferdinand’s future at Manchester United has now ended, as the club have agreed a one year extension on his contract. There was debate about whether or not he was going to continue his career at Manchester United after he retired from International duty last week, but it seemed to have made sure that he got another extension on his contract. Ferdinand commented on his extension, “I am delighted. It has been an incredible journey and I am glad it will continue.”

Earlier this month, retiring Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, did say that the former England centre back was going to be offered a new contract and it has now been officially confirmed. Rio Ferdinand has so far had an extremely successful playing career for Manchester United since joining them in 2002 from Leeds United. The defender has won a total of 10 trophies with 6 of them being the Premier League title, 2 League Cups, 1 FIFA Club World Cup and arguably the best, 1 Champions League triumph in the 2007-2008 season.

Rio Ferdinand looks forward to playing under David Moyes

Rio Ferdinand stated, “Who wouldn’t want to play in this fantastic team in front of 76,000 fans each week? I can now fully concentrate on my club career, which has worked well for me over the past few years. This is a great team to be part of and we are now moving into a new era with the club which is very exciting. I have met with David Moyes. I am really looking forward to working with him and winning many more trophies with this great club.”

Manchester United’s new manager David Moyes talked about Rio, “It is clear for everyone to see that Rio has had one of his best seasons with the club. I think even from the outside you can see what a big character Rio is around the dressing room so I am delighted he has signed a new contract and I am looking forward to working with him.”

Rio Ferdinand moved to Manchester United for £30 million therefore making him the world’s most expensive defender. This year, he was nominated by his fellow footballers to be in the Professional Footballers’ Association’s team of the year after he helped the Red Devils win their 20th Premier League title.
