Roberto Martinez is the new manager at Everton

Its official, Roberto Martinez has been announced as the new manager at Everton following David Moyes’ exit to Manchester United earlier this year. Roberto Martinez had an extremely tough decision to make last month, whether or not to leave his club Wigan, after they had just been relegated. Roberto Martinez played for Wigan earlier in his career and he was loved by the fans for miraculously keeping them in the Premier League for several years and winning the FA Cup as a manager, yet the Spanish manager wanted to stay in the Premier League.

Roberto Martinez stayed loyal to Wigan after all their years of struggle in the Premier League but his loyalty was tested as they were sent down to the Championship last season, and made a difficult decision to leave. He takes the place of David Moyes after he also made the hard decision to leave the club he had been at for 11 years, another loyal manager. Moyes has moved to Manchester United to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson leaving Everton to recruit Roberto Martinez.

Roberto Martinez hopes for Champions League for Everton

Everton had a very strong season in what proved to be David Moyes’ final season with The Toffees and this has caused other teams to be looking at their top players such as Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines. Martinez says he is not worried about the players leaving as he plans to bring in more players for a stronger team, even though Martinez would like to keep both of those world class players in his Everton side.

Everton chairman, Bill Kenwright, stated that Roberto Martinez claimed to get Everton FC into the Champions League. However, the Spanish manager replied to that statement, “I am not saying it is a realistic target, it has to be the dream. We should be fighting to one day be in the Champions League spots. We cannot expect that to be a target straight away that is not the league we are in.”

Some Everton fans are not happy with the appointment after Roberto Martinez couldn’t save Wigan from relegation but he answered his critics, “It is healthy that there are people questioning the appointment. It keeps me desperate to show them what I can do and one day turn them around.”
