Former world number one Rory McIlroy has managed to hit his top form again following a poor slump in his professional golfing career, but now he looks back to his top form in the Dubai Desert Classic. The Irishman and current world number six holds a two shot lead in the tournament, and is also ahead of Tiger Woods, who also played wonderfully firing a bogey-free 68 in Dubai. The Irish winner of the PGA Championship and US Open managed to hit five birdies on the front nine before adding two more birdies and an eagle at the fifth.
Rory McIlroy did not have his best year in 2013 as he fell from the world number one spot, losing the position to the now number one Tiger Woods, and couldn’t retain or win any of the Major Championships. He went into last year with high hopes, following a fantastic season in 2012, but he didn’t hit the expected achievements and now the Irishman has started 2014 well, looking as though he will mirror the 2012 season. In his first tournament of 2014, McIlroy finished as the runner-up in an Abu Dhabi tournament after he had a two shot penalty for a rule violation.
After his stunning nine-under-par 63 performance in the Dubai Desert Classic first round, Rory McIlroy commented, “I played really well from tee to green and drove the ball great again. I think I only missed a couple of fairways and only missed one green where I had to really get it up and down. I took advantage of how I am driving the ball and just need to do more of the same in the next three days. This is a little lower than I went in Abu Dhabi and I feel very comfortable with my game.” His partner for the tournament and defending champion, Stephen Gallacher described McIlroy’s performance as “sublime”.
