The world number one Rory McIlroy managed to edge ahead of Phil Mickelson late on the final day of the US PGA Championship 2014 to be the first player from the United Kingdom to win back to back majors. Earlier on the final day, play was delayed by 2 hours due to heavy rainfall and this delay meant that the play on the final hole was coming to a close just as the light began to fade. At the final hole, there were still 3 players in contention for winning the title as Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler were all in for a shout.
Rory McIlroy wouldn’t have finished his play on the final day if it wasn’t for some great sportsmanship by Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler. Mickelson and Fowler were in the group ahead of McIlroy and they allowed the Irishman to play behind them so that he could finish the day, before it got too dark to continue. Mickelson and Fowler waited on the side of the 18th green as McIlroy finished his fantastic US PGA campaign and gave applause to the Irishman, who became the third youngest player of the modern era to win four of golf’s biggest prizes.
Rory McIlroy, who won the Open Championship last month, commented after winning this US PGA Championship 2014, “I gutted it out. It was different to my previous major wins. To win my second major this year and fourth by 25, it’s just incredible. Winning the Open was huge for me and I said I wanted to back it up. I didn’t think in my wildest dreams I would have a summer like this. I just played the best golf in my life.” Since his separation with tennis star fiancée Caroline Wozniacki, McIlroy has won 4 titles, which is 4 more titles than this time last year.
