Rory Mcllroy must improve his form ahead of St Andrews

Rory Mcllroy, current world number one, hasn’t displayed his greatest form in the US, and his leading opponent has openly goaded him into bringing his best game to St Andrews in July. Jordan Spieth has out rightly challenged his competition following his win at the US open. Spieths win puts him a mere 1.72 points behind Mcllroy and provides him with his own shot at sitting in the top spot.

Rory Mcllroy will face tough competition

It comes as no surprise that Jordan Spieth has stepped up to the challenge in this seasons PGA tour. The young phenomenon has made waves on the golfing circuit, not least because of his success at the tender age of just 21. Following his win on home soil in the US, Speith has expressed that he needs Rory Mcllroy to play on form in the coming majors in order to provide him with sufficient competition. Of course, bringing his ‘game’ is in Rory Mcllroy’s best interests in order to prevent the young American from closing the gap on current world rankings.

Former Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley has commented stating that Mcllroy really does need to respond:

“Jordan is putting it to Rory and that can only be good for Rory. He has to step up to the plate, as well as he played to come forth in the Masters and ninth at the US Open, he left himself too much to make up.”

It is undoubtable that Rory Mcllroy will be tough competition, for this seasons competition, Speith included. The four time major winner is full of confidence however and expects to do well in the last two majors of the season. Rather than responding directly to his competition Mcllroy has simply stated that he believes he is in great form and that he anticipates he will do well over the coming weeks:

“I feel like I have a great chance in the next two Majors, to finish where I did the way I putted shows how good my ball striking has been, so if I can keep that similar and start to roll in a few putts, I can do even better at St Andrews and Whistling Straits. I take a lot of positives out of this. I’ve never hit the ball as good in a Major championship for four rounds.”
