Sebastian Vettel showed why he is the three time Drivers Championship winner for the past three years as he completely dominated the track in Canada. The main fight was for second and third place which was fought between Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton. Throughout the majority of the race, Lewis Hamilton was comfortably in second position until 9 laps to go where Alonso, who started in 6th position, managed to overtake the Brit and claim the 18 points. Whilst those two were fighting for the second place finish, Vettel led every lap, apart from 3, to another comfortable victory for the German.
Sebastian Vettel sealed another 25 points to add to his dominant lead in the Championship leader-board as he is on 132 points. Alonso’s second place in the Canada Grand Prix took him above Kimi Räikkönen in the leader-board to take second place on 96 points. However, Alonso is closely followed by Räikkönen on 88 points and Hamilton in fourth on 77 points. If these 3 drivers are going to want to challenge Sebastian Vettel for the Drivers’ Championship at the end of the season they will need to pick up their form quickly.
Sebastian Vettel commented after the race, “Great race. I had a very good start and then I was able to really go with the car. On the super-soft we saw the tyres were falling apart but we were as good as everyone else and I was able to build a gap. A very important race for us to win, finally we get it off the list and I’m very proud of that. Great car by the team and we were able to pull away from the rest and control the race.”
Throughout the race Vettel only had two scares; once when he brushed the wall early on and the other when he went off track in the 54th lap, but he still managed to keep his lead despite losing 4 seconds. Vettel is now considered to be well on his way to grabbing his 4th consecutive Drivers Championship title despite there still being 12 Grand Prix’s remaining. The next Grand Prix is the Great Britain Grand Prix which home drivers Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button hope to prevail in, in attempt to get some vital points on the board.
