The Formula 1 team McLaren are seriously debating replacing the unimpressive Sergio Perez with a new novice driver, Kevin Magnussen who has never driven in the Formula 1 professionally before. McLaren only signed Perez at the beginning of this season and the Mexican driver has been far from convincing on the race track, and therefore McLaren have already been looking around for a replacement after less than a year in the team. For the whole season, the Mexican has been extremely disappointing as Jenson Button’s new partner, not finishing above 5th in a single race.
McLaren did have the dream British Formula 1 team when Lewis Hamilton was partnering Jenson Button. However, when Hamilton left for Mercedes, there was a hole in the team which was always going to be difficult to fill. Nevertheless, Sergio Perez gave it his best to walk in Hamilton’s shoes and obviously he has disappointed the team, sitting only in 12th position in the Drivers’ Championship table. Button sits in 9th position with almost double Perez’s overall points and the poor performance from Perez means McLaren are only 5th in the Constructors Championships.
The new rumour going around is that Kevin Magnussen is set to replace Sergio Perez and partner Jenson Button if McLaren are not successful in grabbing Fernando Alonso for next season, which is their ideal plan. McLaren hope to lure Alonso away from Ferrari and pair him with either Jenson Button or the novice from Denmark.
Kevin Magnussen commented on him possibly driving in Formula 1 in place of Sergio Perez, “If I get the chance with a big team then it would be because they expect me to deliver and only because they think I am the right solution. I feel I’m ready. I have won in everything I have driven in so why would that change in Formula 1?”
