Sir Alex Ferguson has road named in his honour

The former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson, who has been called the greatest manager of all time for the Red Devils, has had a road near Old Trafford renamed after him. The Manchester council believes that Sir Alex has been so crucial for one of their football teams that he deserves the honour of having a road near Old Trafford named after him. Furthermore, the council also presented Sir Alex with the Freedom of Borough, which is the highest possible honour Manchester council can give to a certain person.

Sir Alex Ferguson is recognised after his legendary managerial career

The road just outside of Old Trafford, which was called Waters Reach, is the road that has been renamed ‘Sir Alex Ferguson Way’. The 76 year old is only the third man ever to be presented with the Freedom of Borough achievement, he was also honoured by having a bronze statue made of him outside the Red Devils football ground earlier this year. Sir Alex Ferguson is the second Manchester United manager to have a road near Old Trafford named after him following the renaming of Warwick Road North to Sir Matt Busby Way in 1996.

Since joining Manchester United from Aberdeen in the 1986-87 Premier League season and being in charge for 26-and-a-half years, Sir Alex Ferguson has won 38 trophies. The Scot has won 13 Premier League titles, 10 FA Charity/Community Shields, 5 FA Cup, 4 League Cups, 2 UEFA Champions League titles, 1 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, 1 UEFA Super Cup, 1 Intercontinental Cup and 1 FIFA Club World Cup. That puts a lot of pressure on Sir Alex Fergusons successor, David Moyes, who is currently sitting in 9th place with the Red Devils.

Sir Alex Ferguson commented at the ceremony outside Old Trafford, “It’s a privilege and an honour to have a road named after me. You don’t expect these things in life. It encapsulates probably the last 26 years – coming to the great club, the history of it. It’s been an incredible journey for me, ending today for me to unveil this road sign: Sir Alex Ferguson Way. I’m really proud of that and I’m proud of everyone who has been associated with the club.” The Scot has gone down in history as one of the greatest managers of all time and Manchester United are now honouring him.
