Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton managed to claim the fastest time in the first practice session of the Spanish Grand Prix 2014 ahead of a surprisingly impressive Jenson Button. Mercedes have been dominating this Formula 1 season so far as their drivers have won every Grand Prix so far. Lewis Hamilton has won the most recent 3 and Nico Rosberg won the opening Grand Prix. However, Rosberg was seriously struggling in this practice session in Spain as he only managed to finish 9 laps and sits as the fifth fastest.
British formula 1 driver, Lewis Hamilton will desperately want to win this Spanish Grand Prix 2014 in order to overtake his teammate, Nico Rosberg, in the overall Drivers’ Championship leader board. Currently, Hamilton is only 4 points behind the leader Rosberg with the third placed driver, Fernando Alonso, trailing by a massive 34 points behind Hamilton. Both Red Bull and Ferrari are looking to catch up with Mercedes in the Constructors Championship after they made some upgrades to their cars before this Spanish Grand Prix 2014 practice session.
Red Bull made upgrades up and down the pit lane, but that didn’t stop Sebastian Vettel’s car from being forced to stop due to an electrical problem, meaning Vettel achieved the 20th fastest time. Ferrari were comparing two cars in this practice, as one had more downforce than the other, following the new front-down designs. This worked out for Alonso who had an impressive practice grabbing the fourth fastest time, whilst his teammate Kimi Raikkonen could only manage to get the sixth fastest time, being 0.209 second behind Alonso. The Spanish Grand Prix 2014 will start on Sunday 11th May.
