Steve McClaren lands Newcastle job

Premier League Club Newcastle United today have a new manager – Ex England Boss Steve McClaren, whom fans are still unsure about. He will be under close scrutiny as we head towards the start of the season.

Mega deal for Steve McClaren

Should he end the club’s 47 year wait for a trophy, or manage to finish in the top eight of England’s top flight, Steve McClaren has been promised a deal that will last for eight years. He was immediately placed on the board of directors after being appointed manager, and is the only manager in the country to hold such a position, giving him more say on financial allocation and club policy.

The supporters, it seems, are underwhelmed by his arrival as only one fan waited to catch a glimpse of the new manager. Steve McClaren now has the unenviable task of bridging the gap between himself and the ever-distrusting fan base that now exists for Newcastle United. This is most likely due to the fact that his last managerial roles have all ended in dismissal or resignation. This is in addition to his disappointing time as England manager.

A transfer pot of up to £50m will be given to McClaren to improve a squad that is low in both quantity and quality. It was only via the mistakes of others that kept them in the premier league last season, something Steve McClaren will be hoping does not happen this time around.

Newcastle United have not had any successful campaigns in the last few years, since the 2011-12 season when they finished 5th. Their cup campaigns have been much the same story – they have not made it past the 4th round of the FA Cup since 2006, when they made it to the quarter-final. This year in the league cup they put in a respectable effort, managing the quarter-final. Still though, Steve McClaren will be hopeful of taking the team further, saying yesterday, “This club has waited too long for a trophy”.

McClaren’s mind has changed somewhat since the start of this year, when he rebuffed advances from the team, instead opting to stay local with Derby, then later opting not to climb aboard a sinking ship and risk his reputation.
