Last night was the second semi-final leg being played between Sunderland and Manchester United at Old Trafford and the overall game was an epic one as it saw extra-time followed by penalties. The night before, unsurprisingly Manchester City managed to extend their first leg victory over West Ham United to a score of 9-0 on aggregate, booking their place in the Capital One Cup final at Wembley. However, the other semi-final did not go as expected as the Premier League champions, Manchester United were knocked out of the tournament by relegation candidates, Sunderland.
In the first leg, Sunderland shocked the football world by defeating the Red Devils 2-1, but travelling to Old Trafford they knew they were in for a difficult test. Eight minutes before half time United went 1-0 up through a Jonny Evans header and from then the Premier League champions should have gone out all attacking, but they didn’t. This cost them dearly as the match went into extra-time which saw Sunderland score in the 119th minute and Man United in the 120th minute to take it to penalties after what was a wonderful finish to the game.
England are notorious for being terrible at penalties internationally and this English league cup game was no different as there were some appalling misses from the players. Out of a total of 10 penalties, only 3 managed to go in as 7 were either missed completely or saved by the goalkeepers; none of the 3 scored were from English players. The final score overall was 3-3 on aggregate and 2-1 to Sunderland on penalties meaning that the Black Cats will go to Wembley to play Manchester City. This loss only puts even more pressure on the Manchester United manager David Moyes, who is not reaching expectation this season.
