The Lions defeat Western Force

The British and Irish Lions absolutely dominated the Western Force yesterday as the game was extremely high scoring. The final score ended up being 69-17 to the Lions with them scoring nine tries with eight different players. Jonny Sexton, Brian O’Driscoll and Tom Croft all started the first game in Australia with great tries going into half-time with a comfortable 27-3 lead.

6 further tries from O’Driscoll, Heaslip, Vunipola, Bowe, Farrell and Parling put even more points on the board, but the main contribution was from Leigh Halfpenny who put away every conversion and scored two impressive penalties.

Unfortunately, the Lions prop, Cian Healy, suffered a bad injury which could end his tour after being carried off on a stretcher in the 37th minute in the match against Western Force. In the match he twisted his left leg and after examination the medics said it was a broken leg but they “assume it is ligament damage” in his ankle.

It looks like it’s all bad for Healy as he is also being investigated for biting an opposition player, Brett Sheehan, in the 17th minute of the game. The ban could be quite long for Healy as when Dylan Hartley bit Stephen Farris’ finger, he received an 8 week ban.

Throughout the game the Lions were in control and only allowed Western Force to score two tries, which is the only reason the coaches had any reason to be upset following a fantastic performance. It was clear in the stats who were the better team as the Lions kept 57% of possession and had 56% of the territory. Many of the other stats were also heavily in the Lions’ favour such as the amount of offloads where Lions had 15 and Western Force only has 3.

The Lions line-up:

Leigh Halfpenny, Tommy Bowe, Brian O’Driscoll (capt), Manu Tuilagi, George North; Jonny Sexton, Conor Murray; Cian Healy, Rory Best, Dan Cole, Alun Wyn Jones, Ian Evans, Tom Croft, Sean O’Brien, Jamie Heaslip.

Replacements: Tom Youngs, Mako Vunipola, Matt Stevens, Geoff Parling, Toby Faletau, Ben Youngs, Owen Farrell, Sean Maitland.
