Tiger Woods drawn with Rory McIlroy at US Open

The 2011 US Open Champion, Rory McIlroy has been drawn with world number one Tiger Woods and world number three Adam Scott to play the opening two rounds in the US Open. The Irishman and the American are two of the biggest names in golf – Woods is widely regarded as the greatest golfer of all time whilst Rory McIlroy has a serious set of skills capable of upsetting Tiger Woods in this week’s US Open. They will play alongside each other in the first 2 rounds along with Adam Scott, who is also capable of testing the top 2 golfers.

2010 US Open Champion Graeme McDowell has been thrown in a group with the two Americans, Jim Furyk and Zach Johnson, whilst Englishmen Luke Donald and Lee Westwood play with Germany’s Martin Kaymer. Current Champion Webb Simpson is playing alongside former world number one Ernie Els and Stephen Fox. Sergio Garcia finds himself in the same group as former US Open winners Stewart Cink and Padraig Harrington.

Tiger Woods looks for 15th major win at US Open

Sergio Garcia and Tiger Woods are both playing in this tournament meaning that it is the first time they have played together since the controversy Garcia started with an offensive comment. It is known they are not the biggest fans of each other on the course, but Sergio Garcia soon after did apologise for saying he would serve him “fried chicken” for dinner. The two skilled golfers have now shaken hands as Tiger Woods officially accepts Garcia’s apology as he prepares for the US Open.

There could be a weather problem at the US Open though – at Merion Golf Club, where the major is being held, heavy rain is falling fast. Just over 100 volunteers have been called in to help the greenkeepers try to keep the course dry and playable for this week’s US Open. A contestant in this year’s US Open and former US Open Champion, Ernie Els, has commented on the weather disruption, “You’re not going to see a firm US Open this year, I’m sorry. I don’t care if they get helicopters flying over the fairways, it’s not going to dry up.”
