The Capital One Cup third round, took place last night and as usual in one of England’s greatest football tournaments, there were goals galore. The big news of the night was that Tottenham Hotspur managed to completely dominate Aston Villa in the Capital One Cup, also known as the League Cup, winning by a score line of 4-0. Tottenham have been on fine form in the Premier League recently sitting second behind derby rivals Arsenal, whilst Aston Villa now have a high possibility of struggling in the next few weeks as their star striker has been ruled out injured.
Two goals from Tottenham’s Jermain Defoe and one each from new signings Paulinho and Nacer Chadli gave Spurs the 4-0 victory, but what grabbed the news was when Jan Vertonghen pulled down Nicklas Helenius’ shorts when through on goal. The comical moment wouldn’t have changed the outcome of the game, even if a penalty was given, as the Villains played appallingly throughout the 90 minutes. Aston Villa fans are going to be worried for their team now as their leading goal scorer, Christian Benteke, has been ruled out of play for 4-6 weeks due to a hip injury.
Elsewhere, Manchester City unsurprisingly dominated Championship side Wigan 5-0 getting revenge on last year’s FA Cup final defeat. The £22 million striker Stevan Jovetić finally scored for Manchester City twice on the night, as goals from Jesús Navas, Edin Džeko and Yaya Touré made the score 5-0.
Fellow Premier League title chasers, Chelsea, counted on Fernando Torres and Ramires to score for the Blues to put them through to the Capital One Cup fourth round with a 2-0 win over Swindon.
The Tottenham and Manchester City games were the most dominant, but West Ham and Norwich struggled in their matches winning by only one goal. Both teams were advanced through to the next round winning their games 3-2, but it proved to be a difficult job.
West Ham were put through to the next round when Ricardo Vaz Tê netted in the 88th minute to round off the 3-2 score line against Cardiff. However, Norwich were forced to take the game into extra-time against Championship side Watford, where Gary Hooper managed to score a very late goal in the 115th minute to avoid a penalty shoot-out.
Some more third round matches are being played tonight with the main game being held at Old Trafford as Manchester United take on Liverpool. Also featuring tonight is Birmingham v Swansea, Newcastle v Leeds, Tranmere v Stoke and the final game kicking off 15 minutes later the others, West Brom v Arsenal.
