After all of the controversy about whether or not to move the FIFA World Cup to the winter or keep it in the summer, Uefa have now come out to reveal that their members believe a winter World Cup in Qatar should go ahead. However, arguably the world’s best football league, the Premier League, had replied to the idea about moving the World Cup with anger as having it around winter time would clash with Premier League matches. This means that the Premier League matches would have to either be played without their best players or move the whole season around to fit the World Cup.
The temperature in Qatar during a normal summer has been reported to reach heights of around 50C, so official FIFA doctors have admitted that they believe the players would not be able to play in such heats. The main solution was to change the dates to winter time, so the heats aren’t as high. But it was also hinted at the fact, by Fifa president Sepp Blatter, that they have made the wrong decision to choose Qatar and maybe the host should be changed. Uefa simply revealed that the debate going on now is which month to start the tournament, January or November of 2022.
Fifa vice-president Jim Boyce commented after Uefa backed the winter World Cup idea, “The World Cup cannot be played in Qatar in the summer. Everyone was certainly in agreement about that. There is still nine years to go and people feel Fifa should sit down with all the major stakeholders and come up with a solution that would cause the minimum disruption to football. There is plenty of time to do that in my opinion. “
